INFORMATIONAL NON-PARTISAN POLITICAL FORUM – AUGUST 29TH, 2019

The Rapides Retired Teachers Association is cooperating with Pineville Concerned Citizens and the Alexandria/ Pineville American Association of University Women for a political Forum for Sheriff of Rapides Parish. There are a lot of candidates and more information is needed from them to make the best decision as we vote for what is probably the greatest factor in our safety. The date in Thursday, August 29 at 6 pm in the Pineville Community Center on Main Street . It is important to help the public be informed about this effort. Babs Zimmerman will be the moderator for this important event. There will be tables for all candidates to display/distribute literature, etc.   There will also be a table for each of the three sponsoring organization to have a display.  If you would like to help in some way, please contact Jo Weaver or Gloria Hearn.

The Summer 2018 Magnolia

Hello, 2017-2018 Alexandria/Pineville Branch Members!
Please find attached the current State AAUW Newsletter which was sent to me by Louisiana State President Vivian Guillory yesterday.  I hope that you will enjoy reading it as much as I did as we begin the new year for AAUW in Central Louisiana!  I will be in touch very soon with our own Newsletter, edited by Haylee Malone, with updates relating to our planned programs for 2018 – 2019.  As always, if you have any ideas for activities, speakers, and/or special occasions, please let Haylee or me know.
Looking forward to increasing our membership and outreach over the next few months!
In the meantime, please go to www.AAUW.org to renew your membership (if you haven’t already done so) or send a check for $76.00 (National, $49; State, $12; Branch, $5)) to our Treasurer, Melinda Martinez, or to me.  Consider encouraging a friend to join, too!
Let me know if you have any suggestions for our group – at any time!

Annual Meeting 2018 – Highlights

The AAUW Annual Meeting was held on June 21, 2018 at the Town Talk Building in Alexandria.  (Many thanks to Melinda Martinez for obtaining venue!)  The meeting was well attended and a wonderful ‘potluck’ meal was enjoyed by all.  As always, Mrs. Gloria Hearn had the agenda well organized and the meeting flowed well, with her humble manner and gracious praise of others.

The guest speaker was the new Chief of Police of Alexandria, Jarred King.  Mr King gave a positive and interesting speech wherein he explained how his mission was to change the perception of Alexandria from a ‘dangerous’ place to live. He also was gracious enough to answer many questions from the floor.

Next, the new officers were installed by Judge Ray Swent.  The following offices were filled as follows:

  • President:  Rosemary Robertson Smith
  • Vice-President (Program):  Pat Barber
  • Vice-President (Membership): Sandra Purifoy
  • Treasurer:  Melinda Martinez
  • Secretary:  Delia Flynn (Since Ms. Flynn was unable to attend Lyndell Edwards stood in for her during the officer installation.)

Following the officer installation, a memorial moment of silence was held for Doris Wright’s husband, Sue Richmond’s husband, and others.

The majority voted to donate flowers in memory of Bonnie White (a lifetime AAUW member) to her church, Woodlawn Presbyterian.

Mrs. Hearn visited Longview, TX and brought the group greetings from a lifetime member, Betty Connor, who is living in an assisted living facility there.

Annual dues were received by Melinda Martinez and are now due for the following year.

Sharing Sad News with Our Members – Ed Wright

On a sad note, Doris Wright (our Book Review Interest Group chairman) has recently lost her beloved husband, Ed Wright, recently.  We are saddened by this great loss for her and remember that he was always supportive of her work as our book chairman.  Doris is ‘swamped’ by paperwork now and has requested to be be relieved of the book club responsibility during the following year.  Please contact Gloria Hearn if you would like to fill this vacancy and chair the Book Review Interest Group this coming year.
